The Five Golden Rules for Making Your Own Wine

Published by admin at 9:52 am under Main Content

Hello all!

First a sincere and happy holidays to every single one of
you. I’ve written a special holiday blog post with one aim
in mind…

To help you get what YOU want in 2009 and to share
some of the secrets that have helped me make the best wine possible…

I’ve broken this down into the five golden rules for making your own wine

As we enter 2009 I will have been making wine at home for 22 years.

WHERE I’VE COME FROM AND WHAT MAKES MY
POINT OF VIEW WORTH LISTENING TO?

Turning 49 years old (in 4 days) I’ve achieved what many people would
typically classify as unattainable at this “young” age – a respected maker of fine wines…

- Produced 3 Award Winning wines in 2006 and 2007

- Conducted not one but six home made winetasting events.

- Bottled my first “Bordeaux” in 2007 (had to import the grapes from France).

- Traveled throughout Europe and sampled homemade wines in Italy, Turkey, Greece and France. I was given “back room” tours in many restaurants and shown exactly how these restaurants made their own wine and then served it to their customers.

- Toured and examined 20+ vineyards and wineries in Sonoma and Napa Valley in California

In March of this year I hosted and Set up the first live conference call with some of the top names in Home Winemaking from around the world. (I’ll share this with you later!)

I guess you could say I’ve done a little “Homework”.

Here we are in Greece (this was just after 2 restaurant tours and a lot of “tasting”):
How to Make Homemade Wine

 ———————————————————————————
GOLDEN RULE OF MAKING WINE #1 – Getting Your

Mind in the ”Giving” Mode - the cornerstone of it all
———————————————————————————

Now here is the *KEY* difference between me and the
majority of people out there.

The way people’s brains are traditionally engineered
is as follows..

“If I give you money/my time what are you going to
do for me”

And this mindset goes deep into everything we do in
our daily lives from..

Getting a  job – what are my benefits, my perks, my
salary

Dating – I’ll take you out for dinner if you spend time
with me, if I gain favour with you

Now think about this for a moment…

What happens if you were to do the opposite?

When I take people out to eat I don’t say
“Please give me money for the food”

When I had a great bunch of people round for
a wine tasting event after I didn’t say “Please give
me $50 a head”

I focused solely on ONE thing only..

To make sure people enjoyed the day and to
give back to everyone.

To have fun, to network and to chill out.

And taste some amazing wines…

So if we revert back to the question..

After the event I had people asking “Well
was it worth it – do you think you will
get anything out of it?”

I can safely say now that if I ever need advice,
have a question on a chemical, or just want some
new ideas to make a new variety of wine, those
who attended my event would bend over backwards to help.

You gotta program your mind to GIVE!

Help people get more out of life, and trust me
it will come back 100 times over.

————————————————————————-
GOLDEN RULE OF MAKING WINE #2-  Break
the rules, decide what you want to make and set
a date to bottle it.
————————————————————————

The trap that most people fall into is the  “Next week
I’m gonna do this, next month…”

Everyone is guilty of this.

Including myself!

For the last few months I’ve been meaning to add
2 more videos and 4 more books to our Inner Circle
Winemaker’s Library…

But I’m just been darn lazy!

However I will have done this by the end of January
1, 2009 at the latest.

I’ve been reading a lot about
‘incremental’ steps to success.

To lose 10 llbs you must lose the first lb first.

To make a million dollars it all starts with the first
$1.

To make 1,000 gallons of wine, first you have to make one gallon.

It’s a very simple philosophy but incredibly
powerful!

For example if you want a to make wine from fresh grapes,  you can start
smaller.  Just get enough for a gallon to start.  Later – get more.

You see the point.

We all have to start somewhere, so aim and PLAN
to start your own first batch and set a starting date.

Stick to it as closely as you can.

—————————————————————
GOLDEN RULE OF MAKING WINE #3-
Follow the ‘right’ people and learn from real
life mentors
—————————————————————

I’ve always had a very simple philosophy in life.

“Follow the people that are successful in what you
want to achieve”

For example if you want to learn how to invest
in property, listen to someone who has done it
over YEARS the hard way, made mistakes and
learn from their advice. I only listen to
people I trust 110%.

There nothing more I hate than ‘fly by nighters’
who try to claim they are an expert in wine making
but really don’t have a clue and are just trying to
empty your wallet.

In wine making, one of the best guys who has
generated so many success stories is Jack Keller.
A great man and a guy who has a terrif site with some VERY
high quality winemaking information.

  ———————————————————————————
GOLDEN RULE OF  MAKING WINE #4 – Be
willing to invest in yourself and take action
on what you learn.

———————————————————————————

Over the recent months I have  purchased..

 - The Way to Make Wine -About how to make excellent table wines

 - Windows on the World Complete Wine Course

 - The Wine Bible - Just a pile
of rubbish but very entertaining  (Just kidding
Karen macNeil’s stuff is really on the cutting edge and worth
every penny)

Here’s the most important lesson to
take away..

Even if I put the material in my computer
watch it and think “Whoah that’s cool Karen how you used that crusher to process 400 lbs of grapes″.

IT WILL NOT MAKE ME A SINGLE GLASS OF WINE!

You need to take action on what you learn
and implement it in your winemaking.

If you buy an ebook on how to make wine
with different fruits then take action on it
and try it out!

Which leads me on to the ULTIMATE lesson..

  ————————————————————————-
GOLDEN RULE OF MAKING WINE #5 – Take
responsibility for your actions and answer
to yourself

————————————————————————–

This is one thing that REALLY bugs me.

And it’s probably the #1 difference between
people who are successfully making wine and those that seem
to get no where and never even start.

When you buy a new product or guide…

You need to take action and use/read/watch the
item you have just purchased to get a
result.

It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work.

In fact the scary thing is nearly all
home winemakers try things that DONT work!

But they take responsibility say “Ok cool -
I’ve tried that it didn’t work so well so lets move
on”

Rather than the attitude “Nothing ever
works for me – I can’t do this”

Even at 15 years old I always told my
school teachers “I am going to be really good at something”.

They laughed and thought I was crazy.

But I took responsibility for myself and what
many thought was nothing more than a
pipe dream turned into reality.

Because I accepted the consequences of my
actions and when things don’t work out,
I held my head high and kept going.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the
Five Golden Rules of making wine and got
something good out of it

    Dear Mike,
4yrs ago whlie visiting freinds I tasted three really great home made wines, each better than the last they were Persimmon, musadine, & Wild Musang Grape wine. I was so impressed that I wanted to try my hand at wine making so I could have those wines again anytime I liked.  This year my partner relented and agreed to try it, because I had been given almost 20 lbs of Persimmons.  YAAAAA!!!!!!!
We contacted an old freind of his that owns Fermentables in Little Rock and we got The starter stuff and Premium blend of Shiraz/Viognier.  It went together so well we started an other batch 1gal crangrape from fruit juice a week later.  That was 1 month ago.
And today we just started a 6gal batch of Persimmon wine.  Awsome so we now have three batches going.  And I'm looking at bottling the 6gal of Shiraz in a month or two.  I've asked all my friend to save bottles for me.  Do you have any ideas for gathering enough wine bottles fast and cheap ?????
Also on the wine bottle front I was given some 1 liter bottles that have screw on tops ??? The glass at the neck of the bottle looks too fragile with stand the outward pressure that a cork in the top would surely exert, but I thought that if I cut some of previously used corks that I have in half and also screwed the caps on that may add strenth.  I only want to use the used corks because they are smaller in diamiter than the # 9's that we bought. Any thoughts ???????
Thank you for all of the information that you have so generiously shared with us in your books and your bloggs.  I needed to get up to speed Fast.  Understanding as much as possible about wine make to sheepard a very impatient partenter through the process.  It's a workin progress.   I need things to go as smoothly as possible if I want to continue making wine. I felt that I need to be able to answer his questions knowledgably and well.  l So I will continue to enjoy your books, receipies, & emails.      We've also watched about 50 You Tube videos, WOW!!! People with No experience are out there teaching others to make wine.  I really apreciated your definitions of common wine make terms.  I just needed to hear them a few times to feel comfortable using them.
This year I am going to talk to my local grocery store about free fruit to make in to wine.  I'm most interested in the Cerry Zin receipy, I will make it when I get enough of the right kinds of fruit.  Space is an issue in a 1200sq ft condminium.  So I'll make as much as my partner will let me.
I'm looking for some really great receipies for musadine wine that not too musky.  Do you know how to mitigate that aspect of those grapes ????? I may be able to get enough Musadine grapes this year to make a batch of that, I just wondered if you had any thoughts. ????
God Bless your hands, your heart, & your philosiphy of generousity.  May you always experience abundant returns on your investments in us.
Sincerley, Your happy students  Sharifah & Fletcher Ward :-)

Thanks for the 5 Golden rules for wine making, in this  Article it does hold true for some of the real life comments made.  I tried to make wine with Dates, with abt 2 kg of it but in the end i got only 2 Bottles of wine which turned out to be wonderful and strong which i have kept fr aging.  But i got a lot of sludge from it please let me know what is wrong.

Interesting concepts, but if you are going to recycle old posts, you should update the dates at least. Year 2009????? Come on now. Tootie

  • DeniseLindsey17@yahoo.com I think your philosophy is very interesting, especially your point of view on giving. It reminds me of the principle of sowing and reaping in the Bible. Oral Roberts (worldwide evangelist and founder of Oral Roberts University) called it the principle of seed faith. Have you ever heard of David Emmanuel Taylor? Everybody should hear about him. David E. Taylor went on a 40 day fast like Jesus did—no food, only purified water for 40 days and nights straight. After that he prayed for a girl with full blown AIDS and Jesus healed her instantly! Her doctors tested her for six weeks and could not believe it. When she told them that David E. Taylor prayed for her in the Name of Jesus and Jesus healed her, they laughed and told her she was crazy and prescribed her some Prozac.
David E. Taylor also prayed for a man with an incurable disease. When Jesus healed him instantly, he gave David E. Taylor a million dollars because he said, “If you hadn’t prayed for me, I would have had to give all of my money to the doctors.”

    (He’s also on facebook)

When I first saw David E. Taylor (he was speaking in a church), I had never heard of him before, but when he spoke, it was so powerful, it practically knocked me out of my chair. I had to find out his name and address so I could find out how he achieved that level of power. He sent me an audiotape called “The Chosen Fast” on which he said that he accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was 18. Subsequently, Jesus spoke to him and said, “There is something I want you to have but you have to fast 3 days to get it.” So David E. Taylor started doing a 3 day (drink only water) fast every week with prayer and Bible study. David E. Taylor knows how to deal with homosexuals. He casts the devil out of them. You should see him in action on www.youtube.com.

Dr. Don Colbert, M.D., www.drcolbert.com, an expert on the prevention of disease and aging, wrote a book called What You Don’t Know May Be Killing You. He said in it that people need to go on a 3 day fast every week in order to stay healthy because most physical illnesses are caused by the build up of poisons, toxins, and wastes in the body and a fast is the best way to get rid of poisons, toxins, and wastes. He said that an alternative to the all water fast is to eat organic fruits and vegetables, organic herbal tea sweetened with honey, and/or thick skinned fruits for 3 days. He suggested thick-skinned fruits because fewer pesticides can get through the skin of thick-skinned fruits. Thick skinned fruits are citrus fruits, watermelon, and bananas, etc. He also said that the main thing that causes people to age and get osteoporosis is eating sugar, sweets, and drinking soda pop. Sugar is very acidic and soda pop is doubly acidic because not only does it have sugar, but it has acids and other gunk added to it. Meat is also very acidic. The body cannot handle all of that acid so it takes calcium out of the bones to neutralize the acid which weakens the bones. Honey is the only sweetener that is healthy for our bones. Sugar and sweets should be consumed only on special occasions and any other time, food should be sweetened with honey or Splenda or stevia (which is an herb available at health food stores and Wal-Mart). At Wal-Mart it is called Nuvia or Truvia. Splenda works because supposedly the molecules are so large that they cannot navigate across the wall of the digestive tract into the blood. Sugar causes insulin to spike in the blood and insulin is what tells the body cells to store fat. Sugar also causes the release of free radicals in the body and free radicals cause cell damage which leads to aging and can also lead to cancer.

Betty Baxter received an outstanding miracle from Jesus when she was approximately 14 years old. You can check out her story in a video of when she appeared on TV with Dwight Thompson on www.youtube.com. She was born deformed and twisted and she could never leave her bed or her wheel chair. Her mother refused to believe that it was God’s will for her child to be deformed so she prayed and kept on praying and fasting and asked Jesus to heal her child according to His Word which says that “by Jesus’ stripes we are healed.” The Bible also says that these signs shall follow them that believe: “They shall lay hands on the sick and the sick shall recover.” She testified in church every Sunday about the goodness of the Lord and thanked Him because she believed that He had healed her deformed child 2000 years ago. Every Sunday, people looked at her still deformed child and laughed. After 14 years, Jesus spoke to Betty Baxter and her mother in a dream and gave them the exact date and time that he was going to heal Betty Baxter. On the appointed day at the appointed time, a cloud appeared in their house and Jesus stepped out of the cloud and went into Betty Baxter’s bedroom and touched her. Mrs. Baxter heard the sound of cracking bones and Betty Baxter, for the first time, was able get up and run and jump and play as normally as any other child. Praise the Holy Name of Jesus! The next Sunday, instead of being wheeled into the church in her wheelchair, Betty Baxter was able to walk into the church and push her wheelchair in front of her. That was the first Sunday that nobody laughed at Betty Baxter’s mom when she got up to give her testimony and to thank and praise the Lord for healing her daughter. I do not believe in abortion for this reason and because the Bible says it is wrong to murder. Betty Baxter became a preacher of the gospel.

I was diagnosed with asthma a few years ago. I couldn’t stop coughing. It became very painful. The doctor prescribed me Advair and other steroids which did not help at all. It helped when I started using Ricola cough drops and eating only fruits and vegetables (preferably organic) and thick-skinned fruits (oranges, bananas, and watermelon) and drinking plenty of purified water and fruit juices and herbal tea sweetened with honey (preferably organic). The coughing gradually subsided until I stopped coughing all together. . I know that the build up of poisons, toxins, and wastes at least partially caused the asthma and eating only fruits and vegetables was necessary to clean out the poisons, toxins, and wastes. Of course, I prayed a lot and got lots of prayer in the Name of Jesus during that time. I give all of the credit to Jesus.

    Sincerely,

    Denise Y. Lindsey
